When mobile phones first became popular the news headlines were all about the dangers of mobile phones, urging us to be careful and to protect our children to avoid getting brain tumours. And that was before they got started on the health risks of living near the mobile phone masts.

But how much truth is there in this? Are mobile phones really so dangerous?

Several studies have been done which have researched the dangers of sim free mobile phones and other types of mobile phones. Most results show that sim free mobile phones, as with all others, are safe and do not cause cancer – however, the results of a few, albeit rare, studies show that the incidences of brain tumours could be linked to excessive mobile phone use.
The current line from scientists studying in this field is that adults should avoid lengthy phone conversations and that children under the age of sixteen should only use their sim free mobiles for essential phone calls. They also say that the greater risks are with older phones which have a stronger signal (now there’s a great reason to buy a new phone!).

The dangers of living near to a mobile phone mast are less clear.

There are areas in the UK where entire villages are fraught with anxiety and ill-health due to the proximity of a mobile phone mast in their village which they are convinced is making them sick.

But the jury is out on whether they are feeling sick or whether it is just the thought of the mast that is making them feel unwell.

More studies are being undertaken in this field.

Until then, due to the gaps in our knowledge it is wise to err on the side of caution. Use your sim free mobiles but keep them away from your children and encourage teenagers to text rather than phone. Use a hands-free kit where possible and avoid using your phone when the signal is low, and it is working much harder then and pumping out more signal.
