Diamonds Are Forever

Shirley Bassey thought so. And James Bond. And who is going to want to argue with James Bond. But just where does this idea that diamonds are forever come from, and just how likely is it that the brilliant and beautiful and seemingly fragile diamond that you buy on those diamond rings really is going to last you forever?

Well, the fact that the name Diamond derives from the Greek word meaning ‘unbreakable’ should give some indication of just how physically amazing these gems are, and whilst our understanding of materials has changed over the last few millennia, diamond has remained the hardest known natural substance on earth. In fact, on top of its uses for adornment, diamond is also extremely well utilised in industry, being a perfect cutting tool due to its immense strength.

So, with that in mind, those diamond rings may indeed very well seem like they will last forever. However, it is worth bearing in mind that, like anything, you need to treat them in the right way if they are going to last. Whilst they may well be extremely tough, diamonds can still get chipped or discoloured if they are not looked after in the correct way. It is therefore very import that, like any jewellery, you make sure you store them in the correct way, as well ensuring you clean them regularly.

The other part of diamonds being forever that may not be totally true, is the fact that they won’t be around forever. The conditions needed to make diamonds are no longer present on earth and, therefore, whilst there may still be plenty for us to mine at present, it may not always be that way, and we could soon see ourselves running low on them, meaning that these amazing pieces of jewellery may not be around forever after all. So make sure you look after yours as best you can.
