Cookers come in handy during school trip

A number of school pupils recently got to take advantage of special cookers during a trip to Cornwall College in Camborne.

The initiative was intended to open the youngsters' minds to the possibility of work in the catering sector, the Falmouth Penryn Packet reports.

The students, from Penryn College, no doubt got to see other pieces of equipment in the training facility, including fridge freezers.

During the day, the pupils had the opportunity to prepare their own pizzas and chocolate muffins in the large cookers available. Meanwhile, they also had the chance to pick up some tips from two of the college's chef lecturers.

The education centre, which describes itself as one of the largest of its kind in the country and has roots tracing back to 1929, has a range of facilities. As well as the fridge freezers and other such things in its catering department, it houses a plethora of technology across its beauty, IT, building and other units.

As well as providing people from local schools with the chance to see what a career in catering may be like, the college also runs so-called 'field to plate' sessions for primary school children to show them where the things they eat come from.

Principal of the institution Dave Linnell remarked: "The catering and hospitality sector is one of the biggest employers in Cornwall.

"By encouraging young people who may want to make a career in the kitchen to come to college and increase their skills and employability we not only make them more employable but the greater their qualifications and skills the greater earning power they will have in the future."

According to the Falmouth Penryn Packet, the college trains potential chefs from across Cornwall, including the teams at Rick Stein's eateries in Padstow and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen in Newquay.
